The recent fire accident at SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, claimed 20 precious lives. According to various sources it had blatantly overlooked a 2013 advisory of state government to improve its firefighting mechanism. Furthermore the hospital reportedly does not possess fire safety certificate. This is not the first case of deadly hospital fire accident in India. Few years back fire at AMRI Hospital in Kolkata claimed 95 lives due to asphyxiation. In September 2016 fire broke out at the Safdarjung hospital in Delhi which was controlled only after pressing three fire tenders into service. Today while many blame hospital management for such accidents, there is also a section of society which held lackluster attitude of the ruling government with regard to safety mechanism in hospitals. In these scenario do you agree that pro-active government involvement with regard to up-gradation of safety measures in hospitals could have averted such catastrophes.
